I’ve always had a wide range of interests.

During one of my internships, we were asked to write short personal profiles—hobbies, favorite shows, fun facts—the kind of things you’d scribble in a friendship book.

It was a lighthearted way to get to know each other.

The team even compiled all the profiles into a booklet, which was such a thoughtful touch.

One prompt asked us to share our ā€œhidden superpower.ā€

I joked that mine was knowing a bunch of random, ā€˜useless’ facts.

Like this one: dolphins don’t breathe automatically like we do—they have to consciously take every breath. If they’re miserable in captivity, they can simply choose to stop.
It’s both fascinating and heartbreaking.

Back then, I didn’t think much of it.

But one colleague said something that stuck with me: ā€œKnowing random stuff is never useless. It’s a real superpower—it helps you connect with people.ā€

At the time, I just laughed it off. Years later, I see how right they were.

When I read The Almanack of Naval Ravikant, I came across the term ā€œSpecific Knowledge.ā€

It’s knowledge that can’t be taught in school or picked up from a textbook. It’s built through curiosity, life experience, and following the things you genuinely find interesting—often without a clear goal in mind.

You can’t fake it, and you can’t force it.
That’s what makes it powerful.

For me, learning random things is play.

I don’t sit down at night thinking, ā€œTime to get smarter.ā€

I follow rabbit holes—books on Buddhism, podcasts about real estate, documentaries on neuroscience.

I have no plans to become a monk or buy property, but I love learning just for the joy of it.

And all of it ends up connecting somehow.

When I work with patients, I often draw analogies or explain something in a completely different way that finally clicks for them.

A student once asked me what books I’d recommend because she thought I was so far ahead of her.

In reality, I had only graduated six months earlier.

What she noticed wasn’t just knowledge—it was how I thought and how I explained things. That’s the magic of Specific Knowledge.

Being able to break down complex ideas and communicate them clearly is a big part of what makes me a good physio.

Finding the root of someone’s pain isn’t work—it’s detective work I enjoy.

The more complicated the case, the more curious I get.

And that mindset?

That’s not something you can train through a single course.
It comes from years of exploring, connecting dots, and paying attention.

So when she asked which book made the biggest difference, I didn’t really have an answer.

Because the truth is: there isn’t a book.

What makes me good at what I do isn’t something I learned—it’s something I developed.
It’s my Specific Knowledge. It’s what makes me me.


Figure out what sets you apart—then double down on it.

Your Specific Knowledge is already there. It’s not something you earn through a certificate—it’s something you uncover by paying attention to what excites you.

Take 10-15 minutes this week to reflect. Ask yourself:

  • What came naturally to me as a kid or teen?
  • What do I lose track of time doing?
  • What topics light me up—even if they seem unrelated to my job?

Write down what you find. You might be surprised by how much of your ā€œrandom knowledgeā€ is actually rare and valuable.
