Iāve always had a wide range of interests.
During one of my internships, we were asked to write short personal profilesāhobbies, favorite shows, fun factsāthe kind of things you’d scribble in a friendship book.
It was a lighthearted way to get to know each other.
The team even compiled all the profiles into a booklet, which was such a thoughtful touch.
One prompt asked us to share our āhidden superpower.ā
I joked that mine was knowing a bunch of random, āuselessā facts.
Like this one: dolphins donāt breathe automatically like we doāthey have to consciously take every breath. If theyāre miserable in captivity, they can simply choose to stop.
Itās both fascinating and heartbreaking.
Back then, I didnāt think much of it.
But one colleague said something that stuck with me: āKnowing random stuff is never useless. Itās a real superpowerāit helps you connect with people.ā
At the time, I just laughed it off. Years later, I see how right they were.
When I read The Almanack of Naval Ravikant, I came across the term āSpecific Knowledge.ā
Itās knowledge that canāt be taught in school or picked up from a textbook. Itās built through curiosity, life experience, and following the things you genuinely find interestingāoften without a clear goal in mind.
You canāt fake it, and you canāt force it.
Thatās what makes it powerful.
For me, learning random things is play.
I donāt sit down at night thinking, āTime to get smarter.ā
I follow rabbit holesābooks on Buddhism, podcasts about real estate, documentaries on neuroscience.
I have no plans to become a monk or buy property, but I love learning just for the joy of it.
And all of it ends up connecting somehow.
When I work with patients, I often draw analogies or explain something in a completely different way that finally clicks for them.
A student once asked me what books Iād recommend because she thought I was so far ahead of her.
In reality, I had only graduated six months earlier.
What she noticed wasnāt just knowledgeāit was how I thought and how I explained things. Thatās the magic of Specific Knowledge.
Being able to break down complex ideas and communicate them clearly is a big part of what makes me a good physio.
Finding the root of someoneās pain isnāt workāitās detective work I enjoy.
The more complicated the case, the more curious I get.
And that mindset?
Thatās not something you can train through a single course.
It comes from years of exploring, connecting dots, and paying attention.
So when she asked which book made the biggest difference, I didnāt really have an answer.
Because the truth is: there isnāt a book.
What makes me good at what I do isnāt something I learnedāit’s something I developed.
It’s my Specific Knowledge. It’s what makes me me.

Figure out what sets you apartāthen double down on it.
Your Specific Knowledge is already there. Itās not something you earn through a certificateāitās something you uncover by paying attention to what excites you.

Take 10-15 minutes this week to reflect. Ask yourself:
- What came naturally to me as a kid or teen?
- What do I lose track of time doing?
- What topics light me upāeven if they seem unrelated to my job?
Write down what you find. You might be surprised by how much of your ārandom knowledgeā is actually rare and valuable.

Donāt chase what looks good on paper. Follow what feels natural. Thatās where your edge lives.
