Do you struggle to stay motivated?
Canât focus on your paper?
Having trouble learning something new?
The issue might not be a lack of discipline or attentionâit could be a stimulation mismatch.
You might be understimulated and bored, or overstimulated and overwhelmed.
Thatâs where the Goldilocks Rule comes in.
This rule states that to stay motivated and get into Flow Modeâyou know, that state where you’re fully immersed and work feels effortlessâyou need to work on a task thatâs just 4% beyond your current abilities.
If itâs too hard, you risk failure or frustration.
If itâs too easy, you get bored.

Okay, 4% might sound a bit abstractâitâs not exactly something you can measure.
But Iâve got the perfect example of how I went from zoning out to full focus.
A few years ago, I started listening to audiobooks to make routine tasksâlike driving or cleaningâfeel more productive.
But I kept getting bored or tired, especially while driving.
I assumed I just wasnât an âauditory learner.â
Then I heard entrepreneur Cliff Weitzman share a similar story.
He couldnât focus while listening to audiobooksâuntil he sped them up.
Thatâs when everything clicked.
My brain wasnât disengaged because I couldnât learn by listeningâit was disengaged because the content was too slow to hold my attention.
Thatâs where the Goldilocks Rule comes in.
If the pace is too slow, you get bored; if itâs too fast, your brain canât keep up.
The good news?
Your brain can adapt.
So how do you find that sweet spotâthat âjust rightâ challenge that keeps you engaged without overwhelming you?
đ§Ș Letâs Experiment
Push your limits just enough to grow.
Try listening to an audiobook at a speed that feels slightly uncomfortable.
Whether itâs 1.8x or 2.0x, your brain will catch upâthatâs where the learning happens. Remember, the perfect pace can change depending on how tired you are, the narratorâs voice, or even the language.
đŻ Try This:
This week, pick a task or habit youâve been avoiding and nudge it just enough to feel challengedâbut not overwhelmed.
Whether itâs a language app, your rehab program, or that dense article youâve been meaning to read, lean into that âslightly uncomfortableâ 4% challenge.
Growth lives just outside your comfort zone, so focus on progressânot perfectionâand watch your motivation soar.
đ§ Final Thought:
Small, consistent pushes beyond comfort create lasting change. Embrace the challenge, and your brainâand lifeâwill thank you.
Keep it simple, stay curious, and keep learningâyouâve got this.
Take care,
