🚀 The Sweet Spot Between Boredom and Burnout

2 minutes

Do you struggle to stay motivated?

Can’t focus on your paper?

Having trouble learning something new?

The issue might not be a lack of discipline or attention—it could be a stimulation mismatch.

You might be understimulated and bored, or overstimulated and overwhelmed.

That’s where the Goldilocks Rule comes in.

This rule states that to stay motivated and get into Flow Mode—you know, that state where you’re fully immersed and work feels effortless—you need to work on a task that’s just 4% beyond your current abilities.

If it’s too hard, you risk failure or frustration.

If it’s too easy, you get bored.

Okay, 4% might sound a bit abstract—it’s not exactly something you can measure.

But I’ve got the perfect example of how I went from zoning out to full focus.

A few years ago, I started listening to audiobooks to make routine tasks—like driving or cleaning—feel more productive.

But I kept getting bored or tired, especially while driving.

I assumed I just wasn’t an “auditory learner.”

Then I heard entrepreneur Cliff Weitzman share a similar story.

He couldn’t focus while listening to audiobooks—until he sped them up.

That’s when everything clicked.

My brain wasn’t disengaged because I couldn’t learn by listening—it was disengaged because the content was too slow to hold my attention.

That’s where the Goldilocks Rule comes in.

If the pace is too slow, you get bored; if it’s too fast, your brain can’t keep up.

The good news?
Your brain can adapt.

So how do you find that sweet spot—that “just right” challenge that keeps you engaged without overwhelming you?

Push your limits just enough to grow.

Try listening to an audiobook at a speed that feels slightly uncomfortable.

Whether it’s 1.8x or 2.0x, your brain will catch up—that’s where the learning happens. Remember, the perfect pace can change depending on how tired you are, the narrator’s voice, or even the language.

🎯 Try This:

This week, pick a task or habit you’ve been avoiding and nudge it just enough to feel challenged—but not overwhelmed.

Whether it’s a language app, your rehab program, or that dense article you’ve been meaning to read, lean into that “slightly uncomfortable” 4% challenge.

Growth lives just outside your comfort zone, so focus on progress—not perfection—and watch your motivation soar.

🧠 Final Thought:

Small, consistent pushes beyond comfort create lasting change. Embrace the challenge, and your brain—and life—will thank you.

Keep it simple, stay curious, and keep learning—you’ve got this.

Take care,
